DNO Decommissioning Process for Renewable Energy Systems in the UK

When removing or decommissioning a renewable energy system (such as solar PV, battery storage, wind turbines, or CHP), you must notify the Distribution Network Operator (DNO). This ensures that the disconnection is safely processed, avoids grid supply issues, and updates the national generation records.

What is a DNO Decommissioning Notification?

DNO decommissioning notification is required when:

  • Completely removing a renewable generation system from the property

  • Upgrading or replacing generation equipment where the original system is removed

  • Disconnecting a system from the grid permanently

  • Decommissioning battery storage, solar PV, or wind turbines

The DNO must be informed to update grid records and ensure the safe disconnection of your system.

What’s Required for a DNO Decommissioning Notification?

Installer & Customer Details

  • Company name & accreditation (MCS, NICEIC, or approved contractor)

  • Installer and customer contact details

  • Site address and MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number)

System & Connection Details

  • Type of system being decommissioned (solar PV, wind, CHP, battery storage)

  • Total capacity (kW or MW)

  • Inverter manufacturer, model, and serial numbers

  • Connection type (single-phase, three-phase, HV/LV)

  • Export capacity before disconnection

Technical Documentation

  • Final system status report (confirmation of safe disconnection)

  • Electrical disconnection certificate

  • Metering removal or adjustment confirmation (if applicable)

  • DNO decommissioning notification form

Application Submission & Process

  • Decommissioning notifications must be submitted to the DNO after removal

  • A formal disconnection request may be required if grid connection needs modification

  • There may be costs associated with disconnecting or modifying the supply

  • DNO processing time: Typically 30 days

What Happens Next?

Once submitted, the DNO will:

  • Acknowledge receipt of the decommissioning request

  • Update their records to remove the system from the grid registry

  • Issue confirmation once the system is fully decommissioned

  • Advise on any network modifications if required
