DNO Application & Notification Process for EV Chargers & Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Chargers

Installing an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger or a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Charger requires a formal notification or application to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO). This ensures the safe integration of charging systems into the electricity grid, avoiding overloads and maintaining network stability.

What is a DNO Application or Notification for EV Chargers & V2G?

The process for installing an EV charger or V2G system depends on:

  • Charger size and power rating

  • Single-phase vs. three-phase supply

  • Impact on local grid capacity

Two main processes apply:

  1. G98 Notification – for small-scale, low-impact EV chargers (≤13.8kW single-phase)

  2. G99 Application – for higher-power chargers (>13.8kW single-phase, three-phase systems, or V2G installations)

What’s Required for an EV Charger or V2G Application?

Installer & Customer Details

  • Company name & industry accreditation (e.g., OZEV-approved installer, NICEIC certification)

  • Installer and customer contact details

  • Site address & property details

System & Connection Details

  • Charger make & model (e.g., Tesla Wall Connector, Myenergi Zappi, Andersen A2)

  • Charging capacity (kW rating)

  • Single-phase or three-phase connection

  • Export capability for V2G chargers (bidirectional charging details)

  • Existing electrical load & maximum demand calculation

Technical Documentation

  • Wiring diagram & charger installation layout

  • Load assessment & impact study (if required by DNO)

  • Earthing & protection details

  • DNO application form (specific to network operator)

Application Submission & Fees

G98 Notification (Up to 13.8kW, Single-Phase)

  • Notification to the DNO after installation

  • No formal approval required pre-installation

  • Typically no application fee

G99 Application (Above 13.8kW or V2G Systems)

  • Pre-installation approval required from the DNO

  • More detailed assessment required

  • DNO application fees apply

  • Processing time: 30-60 days

What Happens Next?

Once submitted, the DNO will:

  • Assess the impact on the local grid

  • Approve the connection or request additional assessments

  • Recommend any required grid upgrades (for high-demand or three-phase chargers)

  • Once approved, installation can proceed

  • A commissioning report may be required post-installation
